Random thoughts:
The Angels are tanking. Tonight, they lost 16-6 to the lowly Seattle Mariners. What's the deal, guys? You're 2.5 games out of first; the first place team lost for the second straight night, but you still can't win? It's been a sad few weeks for Angels fans all around. They could still pull it out--they play the first place A's six times in the next week and a half, including the final 3 games of the season--but, frankly, I don't think they deserve to make it to the playoffs this year, not the way they've played during the most crucial stretch of the season. Then again, the A's don't deserve anything either; they've sucked just about as much as the Angels. Perhaps the Rangers should just win it; now THAT would spite A-Rod!
I sincerely urge everyone out there to check out Elizabeth Gilbert's wonderful The Last American Man. It's the story of a guy named Eustace Conway, a man who has lived most of his life in a teepee, living off the land and preaching the idea of communion with nature. He sounds like a hippy, but he's not; he's intelligent, complex, and a bit hard to figure out. Gilbert's tale is a fascinating one. I'm teaching it to my composition students right now, and I just spent the last day or so rereading the book. It's a great story, and Gilbert is a wonderful, truly empathetic writer. I first read Gilbert's stuff when she wrote for Spin and other magazines in the early 90s. Check this book out!
How is this for a concept: a science fiction and/or fantasy travel guide. It would be just like any travel guide--with basic travel and other information about a given place, including hotel and restaurant and shopping and sightseeing suggestions--only the place in question would be imaginary. Imagine a whole series of travel books on the various Star Trek or Star Wars or Middle Earth worlds: like Lonely Planet Vulcan or Frommer's Death Star or The Complete Traveler's Guide to Mordor. This is a great idea! Imagine how much fun it would be to fill in all the minute details of these places that are never actually spelled out in the books or films or episodes. Fans would go nuts over this stuff. Anyone want to help me make this idea come to life? Let me know.
I can't watch the news any more. I'm just too annoyed and angry and frustrated by the entire political process. It's always been annoying and frustrating, but it feels worse this time around. Perhaps it's because Bush might actually win, despite being perhaps the worst president in US history. He lies about a WAR and gets away with it while Clinton lies about a blowjob and gets impeached? What the fuck is wrong with this country? Anyone in Europe or Asia need an English teacher? I'm willing to emigrate right now. If Bush wins, I don't know if I can stand living here anymore! I'm serious!
